Nicole schilit
Interim Executive Director
Nicole Schilit comes to the Trust with an extensive background in providing direct emergency support to journalists in distress globally. At the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), where Nicole managed CPJ’s Journalist Assistance program within the organization’s Emergencies Department, she spearheaded a multi-organization trauma initiative to address gaps in trauma support for journalists. In addition to addressing the trauma needs for journalists Nicole was responsible for assistance that included medical, legal, prison, and exile support.
Nicole has spent time in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Israel working with refugees and exiled journalists. She has a background in documentary photography and has worked as a photo editor prior to working in press freedom and journalist assistance.
She has an M.P.A from the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University, a B.A. in documentary photography from Oberlin College in Ohio, and in 2003 attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine.
